learning outcomes

  • Figure out the reasons caused unnecessary anxiety.
  • Learn basic methods for reducing pressure.
  • Learn some methods to keep you in a good mood.
  • Understand the importance of being accompanied by friends.

Main objects

In this post, we create an edited video to introduce you some useful methods that help you stay happy. Also, we will provide you with a brochure and pictures to understand the contents.

Steps to be happy

· Firstly, you could spend less time imagining the difficulties and problems which you might meet in the future. It is important to find ways to overcome the problems in your life. However, overthinking about the difficulties that do not occur is more likely to cause negative emotions, even anxiety. That is to say, instead of worrying about what your future might be, you will spend more time enjoying your life right now.

· Secondly, try not to compare your life with others. With the development of social media, such as Instagram and TikTok, you can easily check out your peers and celebrities’ lives. Chances are that you would compare your life with theirs and complain about the problems you encountered. However, the majority of us are willing to share the happy things that happened in our lives without mentioning the difficulties we met. Thus, it is meaningless to compare with them.

· Thirdly, keep in mind that setbacks and difficulties are not terrible. The most horrible thing is losing the courage to overcome them. After all, life is cruel. For the mediocre, frustration could only have a negative influence on them. They are likely to complain about the difficulties instead of overcoming them. However, for wise people, frustration is a significant part of life. They prefer to enjoy the joy and sadness of life.

· Last but not least, you can find a way to relax. For instance, proper exercise is conducive to relaxing the muscles of the whole body and increasing the secretion of pleasant substances (dopamine) in the body, to relieve tension and anxiety. Also, enjoying a great movie and listening to your favourite music is also an effective way to relax. You could choose your own way to relax.

I think the question: how to be happier, is a lifelong proposition for everyone. Some people may think that earning more money will make them happier. Some people may think that sports will make them happier. Of course, some people think that eating good food can make life better and happier, but in my opinion, happiness is to enjoy life with the people you love.

I don’t know if you’ve heard the story of a boy who had two apples, and he gave one of them to his best friend so that they both had double happiness. Sharing is the basis of happiness, so I prefer to have dinner or drink with my friends or boyfriend. When happiness becomes a flowing atmosphere lingering in the air, the emotions of people around will also be unconsciously infected. Happiness, of course, can also be a continuous acquisition of new knowledge. Although learning is a hard process, the sense of achievement it brings is also worth it. Take me as an example. In the first two years, I was very afraid of learning. When I met a difficult problem, I thought about how to escape instead of how to solve it. But right now, I prefer to take the bull by the horns. While I still think solving problems is never easy, the rewards of hard work make me happier.

Reducing comparisons is also a big secret to staying happy. Nowadays, the pressure of social competition is becoming more and more intense. In my country, children not only need to finish their homework in school but also need to finish all kinds of after-school tutoring. Although the proper comparison is an essential part of self-progress, the proper adjustment will also reduce their pressure, to obtain more relaxed and happier. I think it is the right value of life to keep a balance of mind, to satisfy oneself properly and not to aim too high. From my personal point of view, physical happiness is always a low level of happiness, people should have a greater pursuit and ideal in the spirit. If there is no pain, then how do we perceive pleasure? I have always counted overcoming difficulties as one of my spiritual pleasures. I absolutely do not believe that success can be achieved without hard work, just like the Buddhist concept of karma.

Take me as an example: I was studying in an international high school in Shanghai. For studying abroad, the only way was to pass the language test. At that time, my English was very poor, and I didn’t want to learn English. At first I was only motivated by my parents’ expectations and pressure, which made me completely passive; when I forced myself to study, I found that my grades began to get better, and I got praise from others. I gradually began to love learning foreign languages. Besides, I’m a complete behaviourist. I don’t believe in the myth of learning. It takes hard work to improve, though I don’t deny that there are better ways to learn by rote. After half a year’s hard work, my Duolingo score reached 135/160. I felt very proud that solve the difficulties by myself. Physically, I was tired, but mentally, I grew to like it. I need a sense of accomplishment when I’m stronger by myself. It’s the happiest thing in the world.

Commend on Ruoxi’s blog

This is my last blog comment on you. I am very happy to see your progress and growth during this period of study, which is very hard-won. I am also very lucky to be a class friend with you. I really cherish the days of studying together during this period. I think it is true that the connection between videos is very important, which I also neglected, but I believe that we will become more and more skilled in the future. And I noticed that in your video, you added the beginning and the end, which I think I also lack. Overall, your work is almost perfect, and thank you for your valuable comments on my work.https://ruoxiguo0221.opened.ca/2022/06/17/bad-experience-about-editing-videos/

My last post

Imperceptibly arrived at the last blog, time passed really fast. I have to say, I really gained a lot of knowledge from this course that I didn’t know before, and I also realized the fun of writing from creating the blog. This is a rare life experience and asset for me. For our final blog post, we asked for a video clip. I had almost no experience in video editing before. What I did was to record my life in fragments without thinking of categorizing and integrating them. In the process of video editing, I further realized that this is not only a skill we should learn, but also makes life more meaningful.

The video I edited is about some fragments of my personal life from 2020 to 2022. I used the app iMovie. I downloaded these small videos from the mobile phone to the computer, cut them into a suitable length and put them together, and added a background music. I think it was a successful attempt as a beginner.

I further realized the fun of this aspect, and I believe that I will keep the habit of video editing in the future.

Comment for Ruoxi’s blog

Your writing is always surprising, and I have further improved my thinking after reading your blog. For example, I think the multi-angle and multi-faceted presentation you proposed is very instructive. It is well known that a good work is never single. And I think the background check that you mentioned is also a very important part. We, as an audience, tend to be more interested in things that we know about. It’s human nature. I think I’ll add some of that to my future blog as well. In addition, the interaction between the author and the audience is also very important, which is also a problem I neglected. We should consider the possibility of all ages reading our work, because it’s public, right?

I look forward to your next blog post and progress.https://ruoxiguo0221.opened.ca/2022/06/11/new-thoughts-about-my-future-design/

I learned it through this course

Before I started assignment 3, I really had no idea about this requirement. Because I wrote every blog post carefully, I don’t know where to update it. But when I looked into what I had learned in this course, I found that there was still some room for improvement.
Of course this course was my first exposure to a similar type of course, which was blogging. I have always been a weak person in writing, and usually I do not exercise this ability consciously. Therefore, it is also a good opportunity for me to experience the pleasure of recording my feelings and opinions in words. I also cherish this opportunity.
From the perspective of the course itself, this course has taught me the importance of learning methods and multimedia. I am glad that digital teaching has become popular in our daily life. In addition, it was the first time for me to contact canva, the world’s 13th web page, which was much more convenient than the traditional PPT I was used to. All of this, I believe, is due to the modern digital dissemination of information.

How to improve my blog

As I write this, I have just understood the twelve learning principles we need to learn that week. At that time, I thought I had written well, but after several weeks of study, when I read through this article again, I found many shortcomings in my writing at that time.

The original one
After I update it

First of all, I made a more detailed analysis of some of my views and listed more specific examples. In fact, I find myself habitually describing theory and reasoning in most of my writing. This is certainly an essential part of explaining something, but it is actually less accessible to the reader’s experience than a concrete example. Therefore, I have included part of my childhood learning experience in my updated blog, which will make it easier for readers to understand the differences between Chinese and Canadian education models and their results. I will pay more attention to this in future writing.

Secondly, I found that in the very beginning of my blog, I also mentioned my coping methods in the face of the new learning mode. I think this is too general and fails to express the connection between my personal understanding of learning life and the knowledge I have learned in this course. Therefore, I further elaborated the study methods and personal views that I think are desirable. Of course, I hope that the free and easy learning mode can be popularized all over the world, because it can more effectively stimulate students’ learning motivation, but based on the social situation in China, I think there is still a long way to go.

Finally, in the original blog, I added a video at the end of the blog. This video is the most viewed video on learning principles I’ve ever found on YouTube. At the time, I thought that the video with the most views would best support of the point I was making in this article. But I have to admit that when I’m reading an article, unless it’s a necessary instructional video, I mostly fast-forward and don’t really get to the end of it. This should also be a common problem for most people. So I added a simple picture to my blog post after the latest changes. I think it’s more obvious than a few minutes of video. And in the future writing, I will probably use pictures more frequently to support my argument.

The above is my update. I hope to make progress with everyone in the remaining days. It will be my honor.https://loreforever19.opened.ca/2022/05/27/learning/

Hi, Ruoxi,

I read your blog and I think it’s great! You played your game like you always do. In this article you describe the shortcomings of ppt through your own experience, so it sounds like a really bad experience. Of course I’ve had similar experiences. Your article also made me realize my shortcomings. For example, I can also use some examples from my life when writing in the future, so that readers can better understand what I want to express. I hope we can be better and better!https://ruoxiguo0221.opened.ca/2022/06/03/my-worst-presentation-experience/

The Design of Multimedia Learning Objects and Artifacts

In our daily life communication and learning, creation and design are also closely related to us. Whenever we learn a new knowledge, just understanding the explanations and exercises in the book may not make us understand the knowledge in a real sense. At this time, perhaps creating relevant learning experience and materials will enable us to better understand and apply the new knowledge in this process. In the process of creation, we can also embed our own insights, and in the process of sharing with others, we can also improve our own capabilities.

In the previous study, PPT may meet most of our needs, and we will use PPT to help us integrate and understand. But in fact, the template and layout of PPT sometimes seem crowded and messy, which may lead to confusion of thinking and lack of interest in learning, So Canva is a better choice.

In fact, this was my first encounter with Canva, and it was a new experience for me. Canva was previously ranked 13th in the world’s Top 100 Tools for Learning, just behind word documents, which we often use. Compared with traditional PPT, canva’s page is more concise and easy to understand, and more suitable for understanding and propaganda. I also look forward to experiencing more and more fun of learning Canva in the future.

Comment of Ruoxi’s blog

Hi, Ruoxi!

I read your blog carefully, and I found it very interesting. Whereas my blog is mostly about macro concepts, you use more detailed examples to explain the principles you apply to your learning experience. This further helps me to understand the learning methods and learning principles. Learning is ultimately a matter of skill. My former teachers used similar methods to get us to learn. The video you found at the end of this blog echoes the main content of this blog, which makes me understand the meaning of learning at a deeper level. I look forward to your next blog post!https://ruoxiguo0221.opened.ca/2022/05/27/new-thoughts-about-my-learning-experience/

Learning

As the saying goes, it is never too late to learn, and learning is what we have been studying since we were born. From when we were born to learn to talk and walk, to the age of the growing school to learn knowledge and culture, learning can be said to be everywhere.

Through today’s reading and learning, I have learned that learning can be divided into 8 principles, which are independent but closely related to each other. If I had used any methods in my first 20 years of study and life, I believed they were readiness, exercise and recency. In fact, the overall education model in China is relatively rigid, which I think is due to the fact that China has a large population and limited opportunities, so there is a lot of competition. Therefore, I had been exposed to more exam-oriented education since I was a child.

To be specific, I have been taught to study for exams since childhood. When I was in primary school, my mother would enroll me in various interest classes, which took up a lot of my spare time. Not only do I need to finish my homework in class, but I also need to finish a lot of extra homework. As much as I hate to do it, I hate to be inferior to others. What I didn’t know was that this was actually bad for my study habits and I didn’t feel the pleasure of learning.

After I came to foreign countries, I found that the education mode here is more flexible. Accordingly, I also need to spend more time on self-restraint and planning in private.

In fact, I was not used to such a learning mode at the beginning. Suddenly, I broke away from the supervision and discipline of the teacher, which made me lack of self-discipline in the beginning of my study and life, and also delayed some lessons. But I gradually found my own way of learning, and it felt even better than when someone was watching me. At the beginning, I did not know the reason for this, but after learning this course, I realized that many education modes and concepts in my country did not follow the basic learning principles, which led to my unhappy study.

Principles of study

The diagram above illustrates several important core about learning ideas in the simplest possible terms, which is exactly what I want to express. All the supervision and urging of the outside world are inferior to someone’s own love and desire for knowledge, and the correct learning method is the best teacher to stimulate the passion of learning. This is more useful than any other power.

The principle of learning

Of course, although I have explored the road of learning for so long, I still have many shortcomings. For example, due to too many tasks, I forget that I am most willing to learn when I feel pleasant and satisfying, which indirectly leads to my low learning efficiency and the effect is just the opposite. And I am also trying to connect learning with things I am interested in to help me understand and apply them more deeply.
To put it into a nutshell, learning is everyone’s lifelong lesson, only find the right way will get the most benefit from it.
